Australian Centre for Photography.

Hide Profile

The Australian Centre for Photography was founded by David Moore, Wesley Stacey and a committee that included Laurence Le Guay, Daniel Thomas and Peter Keys. The aim of the Centre was to promote and encourage photographic practice and exhibition in Australia. The Gallery opened its doors in 1974 on Paddington Street, with a workshop facility following in 1976. The Centre was responsible for recognising the early careers of important Australian photographers such as Bill Henson, Tracey Moffat and William Yang; the first retrospective exhibitions of significant photographers such as Max Dupain and Olive Cotton were also an initiative of the Australian Centre for Photography. The Centre relocated to its current premises on Oxford Street, Paddington in 1981.
