Maud Sharpin was the daughter of a eminent Bedford doctor. Her elder Sister Evelyn married Colonel Apsley Cherry (who later added the Garrard to the family name). Maud was the aunt of Antarctic explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard who served as assistant zoologist during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott). During the First World War Maud served in Greece as a nurse.
