Living Stage Theatre Company, the outreach professional theatre company of Washington, DC's Arena Stage, was founded by Robert A. Alexander in 1966. Alexander remained as the Artistic Director until 1995.
The company consisted of a small multiracial group of theatre professionals who worked with diverse populations that included anyone who by reason of economics, age, mental or physical disability might not have access to the arts. The company created plays that included poetry, music and dance that were specifically for and about its special audience. Audience participation was encouraged. During Robert Alexander's leadership, the company toured nationally and internationally presenting plays and residencies. Washington area performances were given free of charge at sites around the city and at the company's theatre at 14th and T Streets.
Living Stage's performance style differed from general improvisational performances by incorporating theatre for social change into their performance. During a performance, an ensemble of artists improvised issues and concerns raised by the audiences. The scene froze at a critical moment when the main character faced a dilemma. Then, the audiences would make decisions or act out possible solutions for the characters. The performance was typically followed by a participatory workshop. Living Stage worked with diverse populations that included: the disabled, impoverished students, teen mothers, incarcerated youth and adults, parents, teachers, the elderly and community members.
The company has been committed to the belief that an artist lives within every person and that encouragement of this personal artistry can lead to a better life. The company's mission was to transform individuals and communities through creative empowerment.
