Walter E. Hastings got his start in photography in 1918 when his Boy Scout Troop gave him an inexpensive camera for Christmas. He was hired by the Dept. of Conservation as their photographer. Hastings took most of his pictures during his 25 years with the Dept. He became so well known in the field of nature photography, that he did a film on lemmings for Walt Disney. In 1951, Hastings became a teacher of nature in a public school. He was approached by the founder of Interlochen Center for the Art's founder, Dr. Joseph E. Maddy, about working for Interlochen. Hastings conceived an idea for a museum at Interlochen to display his photographic and mineral collections. The museum opened in 1956. He and his wife Ada spent the last years of his life at their home in Arizona. Interlochen realized the Hasting photographic collection might be better used and preserved if it were donated to the State Archives of Michigan.
