Bates, Bernarr.

Bernarr Bates was born in 1910 in Fort Collins, Colo., where his father was one of the first forest rangers. Bates graduated from Stanford University in 1932 and entered the National Park Service. Bates served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1963. In 1955, he joined the California Redwood Association, as its press secretary. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Club, served as a travel editor of Sunset Magazine from 1946 to 1951 and was an active environmentalist until his death in 1996.
