The Department of Aeronautical Engineering was established in 1916 and the first degree awarded in 1917. Professor Felix W. Pawlowski, who had taken the first aeronautical engineering course ever offered, that of at Marchis in Paris, was hired by Dean Cooley as instructor of Mechanical Engineering in 1914 and began lecturing on aeronautics. The separate degree program established in 1916 was the first in the United States.
