Ioann, Archbishop of San Francisco and Western United States, 1902-1989
Variant namesArchbishop John (Shahovskoy) was born in Russia, studied in Europe and served as a priest in Yugoslavia, France and Germany. He came to the United States in 1946, served as Bishop of Brooklyn, Dean of St. Vladimir's Serminary, and Bishop of San Francisco. He was raised to Archbishop in 1961, and retired in 1979.
