Charles Ellis Sr. (1867-1957) was a prominent Savannah businessman and civic leader. Ellis served as the Director of the Savannah Cotton Exchange for two terms in the 1890s. In 1901, he helped to organize Mutual Fertilizer Company. Ellis was active with the Chatham County Board of Education, serving as president of the board from 1928-1934. From 1924 until 1940, he served as president of the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences while simultaneously filling the role of president of the Augusta and Savannah Railroad (1924-1953). Charles Ellis Elementary School was named in his honor in 1935. In 1891, Charles Ellis married Margie Mongin Hardee.
