William Hillman was born in New York City, on September 5, 1895. From 1915 to 1925 he was a reporter for News Services. He received his A.B. from Columbia University in 1917. On September 5, 1925 he married Angela Sermolino. From 1926 to 1931 he was a correspondent for Universal Service and Hearst newspapers in Paris, Berlin, and London. From 1934 to 1939 he was the Chief of Staff of foreign correspondents for Hearst newspapers. From 1939 to 1940 Hillman worked as Foreign Editor for Collier's. From 1941 to 1945 he worked as a radio news commentator with NBC and the Blue Network. From about 1945 to 1962 he was a roving correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Angela S. Hillman died in 1948. In 1952 Hillman became the Editor of Mr. President, a collection of President Truman's letters, diaries, and other personal papers. He married Margherita Bisconti on August 27, 1952. From 1953 to 1962, Hillman was an assistant to Harry S. Truman in the writing of Memoirs, a publication of Truman's personal memoirs, and in other literary and television projects involving the former President. Hillman died in New York City on May 30, 1962.
