Robert Henry Tate was from Hall County, Georgia. He married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cantrell, age 19, on February 14, 1864. Tate left his bride shortly thereafter to serve as a member of the E Company, Second Florida Infantry.

After the war, the Tates stayed in Georgia for two years. They had a child in October 1865. From 1868 to 1870, they lived in Platte County, Missouri, where they had two more children. In 1870, the family moved to Mitchell County, Kansas, where they homesteaded. The Tates had seven more children before Robert died on July 9, 1884.
