Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
Variant namesCheyney University of Pennsylvania had its beginning in the $10,000 bequest of Quaker philanthropist Richard Humphreys, for the establishment of a school for the education of African Americans; African Institute was founded in 1837 and name changed to Institute for Colored Youth; opened in 1840 with five male students; in 1902 the school moved from Philadelphia to the farm of George Cheyney, 25 miles west of Philadelphia; after being administered by a Quaker Board of Managers for 85 years, the school was sold to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1922 and became a state funded normal school; became a member of the State System of Higher Education in 1983; name changes include Institute for Colored Youth (1837), Cheyney Training School for Teachers (1914); Cheyney State Teachers College (1951), Cheyney State College (1959), and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (1983).
