Confederate soldier; colonel, Third Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers; native of Newberry District, S.C.; son of Thomas B. and Laura Adams Rutherford; educated at The Citadel and South Carolina College; studied law and commissioned Solicitor in Equity, 1860; married Sallie Fair, Mar. 1862; killed in action at Strasburg, Va., 13 Oct. 1864.
