Neill Webster Macaulay was born in 1904 in Oconee County, South Carolina. After graduating from the Atlanta Southern Dental College (Emory University) in 1926, he served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during World War II. Dr. Macaulay practiced dentistry in Columbia, South Carolina for thirty years. Dr. Macaulay was affiliated with numerous professional and community organizations, including the South Carolina Historical Society, the Society of the Cincinnati of the State of South Carolina, Sons of the American Revolution Society, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Torch Club of Columbia, and the St. Andrews Society of Columbia. Dr. Macaulay was the secretary of the South Carolina Regional Education Board for twenty years, and was also one of its organizers. Dr. Macaulay authored two books, History of the South Carolina Dental Association, and the Centennial Edition of the History of the South Carolina Dental Association. Dr. Macaulay was a key figure in the creation of the MUSC School of Dentistry. He campaigned for many years about the need for a dental school in South Carolina. The first class was admitted to the school in 1967. Dr. Macaulay was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1976, and served on the board for twelve years. The Macaulay Museum of Dental History at MUSC was named in Dr. Macaulay's honor in 1973. Dr. Macaulay married Eliza Barron, and had three children. His son Alexander served as a South Carolina Senator. Dr. Macaulay died in 1983.
