Oberg, Paul Matthews, 1904-1988

Paul Matthew Oberg was born in Center City, Minnesota on April 14, 1904. He earned his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1925. From 1926-1928, he was a fellow at the Juilliard School of music in New York City and earned his master's degree in 1938 and Ph.D. in 1944 from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He was a staff pianist for WCCO radio (1925-1933), instructor at Gustavus Adolphus College (St. Peter, MN) from 1927-1928, professor at the University of Wichita from 1933-1942 and was a pianist and organist for the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra for seven years. In 1942, Dr. Oberg joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota as professor and chair of the music department. He held the position of chair until 1965 and retired from the University in 1972. Paul Oberg died in November 1988.
