Biography
James Horton Shankland was born in Nashville, Tennessee, August 12, 1846; received law diploma from Brown's University, 1869; returned to Tennessee and admitted to the bar, 1870; came to San Francisco, California in 1874 where he served as attorney for the San Francisco Board of Trade for thirteen years; relocated to Los Angeles in 1888; partner, Graves, O'Melveny, and Shankland, 1888-1904; partner with son-in-law, Shankland & Chandler, 1904-14; was a founder and early officer of the Los Angeles Bar Association; married Louisa Fowler, daughter of Joseph S. Fowler, 1874; died January 24, 1923.
Joseph Smith Fowler was born in Steubenville, Ohio, August 31, 1820; graduated from Franklin College, 1843; studied law in Bowling Green, Kentucky; admitted to the Tennessee bar and practiced until 1861; comptroller of Tennessee, 1862-65; U.S. Senator, 1866-71; his daughter, Louisa Fowler, married James Horton Shankland in 1874; resumed his law practice in Washington, D.C., until his death on April 1, 1902.
