Woman's Christian Working Association (Presbyterian Church, Ottowa, Ill.)

Hide Profile

On Sept. 17, 1880 Mrs. Anna Tressler Scott made a motion before her Presbyterian woman's group in Ottowa, Ill. to create an autograph album for the wife of the President of the United States, Lucy Webb Hayes, to show their appreciation of her position on Temperance. Over eight thousand circular tubes were sent out containing a letter of purpose and testimonial to Mrs. Hayes and a parchment form with entries for signature, address, official position and profession. Over three thousand were returned, many with notes of sentiment, poems or letters. These were then made into an elaborate embroidered silk album and presented to Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes.
