Bashmakov was an ethnographer in Russia and, after the Civil War, in France. His major works include "La synthes̀e des per̀iples pontiques" and "Cinquante siec̀les d'ev̀olution ethnique autour de la mer noire." He was also associated with the emigre monarchists in France, and was a member of Grand Duke Kirill's "state council" (gosudarevo soveshchanie). Marii︠a︡ Bashmakova was the author of a volume of memoirs, Mem̀oires (as Marie de Bashmakoff).
