Philibert Chabert was a pioneer of veterinary medicine and is best remembered for giving the first important clinical description of anthrax.
Anthrax was originally known as Chabert's Disease and played a central role in the proof of the germ theory of disease and the foundation of bacteriology via the anthrax studies of Darvaine, Koch and Pasteur later in the nineteenth century. A student at the first veterinary school, in Lyons, Chabert came to Paris where he taught at and, in 1780, took over the Royal Veterinary School.
