Patricia Hamilton Gyi (PHG) was the Director of Equity Programs at the Ohio University (OU) College of Osteopathic Medicine from approximately 1988 to 2002. In her role as director, PHG was involved in several committees dealing with the college's equity, diversity, and affirmative action issues. Prior to this position, PHG was an assistant dean in OU's College of Communication. In 1987, she became the first African American to serve on the Athens City Council. She retired from OU in 2002.

The Department of Social Medicine (DSM) in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) at Ohio University is an interdisciplinary department comprised of social scientists, humanities scholars, and physicians. Members of the department study the dynamic interplay of people, culture, and the environment, and its impact on health care delivery and health outcomes. Marjorie A. Nelson (MAN) is Associate Professor Emerita of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in the DSM. She holds a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Public Health. MAN was involved in virtually all aspects of the Osteopathic Medical Center and the COM as a clinician and as a faculty member.

In 1972, the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA) House of Delegates passed a resolution calling for the formation of a committee to study the need and realistic possibilities of starting an Ohio osteopathic college. By 1975, the OOA had completed a successful lobbying campaign that resulted in passage in the Ohio General Assembly of Amended House Bill 229 that created Ohio's only osteopathic medical school as a "constituent part" of Ohio University (OU). Grosvenor Hall became the first medical school building for the OU College of Medicine in 1975.

The Center of Excellence for Multicultural Medicine (COEMM) at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine supports disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students who have career goals in the healthcare field by providing programs designed to improve student access and success. COEMM consists of two grant-funded programs: the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) and the Center of Excellence (COE). With grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the HCOP and the COE administered a variety of programs for minority and disadvantaged students, with the aim of creating a pipeline to the health professions beginning at middle-school age and continuing through successful completion of formal training for one of the health care professions (medicine, physical therapy, etc.).

The Department of Specialty Medicine (DSM) at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) was established in 1990. The DSM consists of certified osteopathic (D.O.) and medical (M.D.) physicians in different specialty areas such as general surgery, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, pathology, psychiatry, radiology, diabetes/endocrinology, acupuncture and dermatology.
