Gerhard De Jonge was born in Zeeland, Michigan, in 1859. He graduated from Hope College in 1882 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1887. He served as pastor at South Blendon Reformed Church from 1887-1890 and as pastor of Vriesland Reformed Church from 1890-1912. In 1912 he was appointed agent for Hope College and Western Seminary, and in 1914 he became a missionary for Classis West Michigan. He also served as associate editor of "De Hope."
