Hall was born in Granville, Ill. in 1870. He attended Oberlin College and Dartmouth College, receiving his A.B. degree from the latter in 1892. After graduating from college, Hall accepted the position of physical director and football coach at the University of Illinois. At the same time he studied in the office of an Urbana lawyer, so that he was able to enter Harvard Law School as a second year student in 1894. He received his LL.B degree in 1896, practiced law in Pennsylvania for one year, then joined the Samuel Leland Powers firm in Boston in 1897. Hall became the vice president of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1913 and the vice president of the Electric Bond & Share Company of New York in 1917. During World War I he served as business manager of the Student Army Training Corps. In 1919 Hall became a vice president at American Telephone and Telegraph Company; he was given the task of dealing with problems of personnel relations. Hall was elected as an alumni representative to the Dartmouth Athletic Committee in 1895. He later became chairman of the fund raising committee for Alumni Gymnasium. He gave the infirmary, Dick's Hall, to the college in memory of his son. Richard Drew Hall, who died during his sophomore year at Dartmouth College. When he retired from AT&T in 1930, Hall became a lecturer in Management and Industrial Relations at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration. He died in Hanover, N.H. in 1932.
