Robert Bolton, Sr. (1723-1789) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He moved to Savannah, Georgia around 1748, where he became a prosperous merchant and was involved in civic affairs. In 1764 he was appointed as Savannah's first postmaster. His son, Robert, Jr. (1757-1802) was also a merchant. He was co-partner with his cousin, John Bolton (1774-1838) under the firm name of Robert and John Bolton. Curtis Bolton was a brother of John Bolton.
