Oklahoma State University. College of Human Environmental Sciences

Hide Profile

For nearly a century instruction in home economics has been a vital part of Oklahoma State University. In 1900 Maude Gardiner was hired to establish a department of Domestic Economy. Miss Gardiner attracted fifty female students by October of that year. The department continued to grow and in 1909 became a division with six faculty members. Graduate courses were also established at that time. By 1918 a M.S. in home economics was offered. Short courses were also taught as well as courses specifically for men. Growth and change have continued throughout the century as home economics faculty have adapted programs to meet the needs of students and the changing society. Several departments function under the guidance of the college, including home economic education, clothing and textiles, hotel and restaurant administration and family study programs.
