The San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah is a non-profit Zionist organization supporting the improvement of health services in the Jewish homeland of Israel. The San Antonio organization also seeks to educate Americans on Jewish traditions and culture. Henrietta Szold founded the national organization of Hadassah, and was present at an early meeting to organize the San Antonio Chapter, which was formally organized in 1921. The San Antonio Chapter raises money for the Hadassah Medical Organization and Medical Center in Jerusalem. The annual Donor Dinner is the largest fundraiser in this effort. Funds are also raised locally for Youth Aliyah, a program originally for the rescue of Jewish children in Germany during the World War II era. Youth Aliyah evolved to sponsor disadvantaged youth in Israel by providing funds for food, clothes, and education. Prominent members in the history of the San Antonio Chapter include Mrs. Max Goot (Leah), who served as its first President; and Rose Treiman, who put forth tremendous effort in helping Jewish soldiers during World War II.
