Hide Profile

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) The Augusta and Savannah Railroad Company was originally incorporated as the Augusta and Waynesboro Railroad Company on December 31, 1838. The Company operated a 53-mile route from Augusta, Georgia to Millen, Georgia; where it met the lines of the Central Railroad and Banking Company. The Central Railroad and Banking Company leased the line in 1852. On February 16, 1856, the Company's name was changed to the Augusta and Savannah Railroad Company.

(Cont.) On October 24, 1895, the reorganized Central of Georgia Railway Company obtained a 101-year lease of the Augusta and Savannah. Stockholders voted in 1947 to convey all assets of the company to the Central by 1949. At this point they voted to liquidate the company. An act of Dissolution was passed by the Georgia State Legislature in 1951. The Augusta and Savannah Railroad Company was finally liquidated and its charter surrendered in 1953.
