Born in Utah in 1900, LaMar W. Harris received his D.D.S. from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, the Dental school of Loyola University Chicago, in 1929. During the Great Depression he volunteered with the Relief Commission to do extractions for the indigent and during World War II he served in the Navy, making dentures for Naval recruits before being assigned to the Naval Dental School in Bethesda. His interest was primarily in restorative denstistry and he was one of the founders of the Academy for Plastics Research in Dentistry (the Academy of Dental Materials).
