The company was formed on August 20, 1881 from the consolidation of The Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad Company, The Columbus and Toledo Railroad Company and The Ohio and West Virginia Railway Company. February 25, 1899 conveyed by deed by M.E. Ingalls and George H. Gardiner, acting for the reorganization managers to The Hocking Valley Railway Company.

1881 acquired Hocking Coal and Railroad Company. July 24, 1886 made contract with Kanawha and Ohio Railway Company for joint use of lines. February 25, 1897 placed in receivership. January 4, 1899 plan of agreement for reorganization made.
