Holt was born 1803 Oct. 14 to Dr. William and Lucy Saunders Holt, in Elberton, Elbert Co., Ga. Holt graduated in medicine at the South Carolina Medical College in Charleston, S.C.

He moved to Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., in 1827, and practiced medicine there for nearly fourty years. He married Laura Hall, the daughter of Bolling Hall (1767-1836), in 1830 in Autauga Co., Ala.

Holt was a Whig and the mayor of Montgomery in 1837, after serving in 1836 as a major of a regiment in the Creek War.

He and his wife had eight children: Mary Elizabeth,m. Lewis C. Jurey; William Bolling, m. Ada E. Holt; Samuel Elbert, m. Ellen Gaines; Laura Hall, m. William R. Pickett; Florence, m. Joseph Hodgson; Charles Abercrombie, m. Melanie Weeks; Bolling Hall, m. Fanny Golson; and Frank Saunders, m. Mary Bentley.

Holt died 1863 Apr. 23 at Montgomery, Ala.
