Ashton, Ned (Edward Lowell), 1903-1985.
Award winning civil engineer, known for his new bridge designs and construction and his reconstruction of older bridges. Ashton designed and worked on bridges in Iowa and throughout the United States, developing several new construction techniques over the course of his career. In addition to his bridge work, Ashton also worked on the Hoover, Coulee and Boulder dams for the Bureau of Reclamation, designed telescopes, worked for the Army on the Army Reserve Training Center in Iowa City, worked on several projects for the State University of Iowa (including a bleecher project for Kinnick Stadium), numerous projects for the city of Iowa City, and a project for the Crandic Railroad. He was a member of the civil engineering faculty at the State University of Iowa from 1943-1957.
