Robert Henry Fauntleroy (1806-1849) was born in Clarke County, Va. His sister, Emily Carter Fauntleroy (1793- ), married her first cousin, Joseph Fauntleroy (1784- ), of Fauquier County, Va., and in 1827 they moved along with Robert and three of his brothers to New Harmony, Ind. There Joseph became a member of Taylor, Fauntleroy and Company, merchants in New Harmony.

In 1835, Robert H. Fauntleroy married Jane Dale Owen (1806-1861), the sister of Robert Dale Owen (1801-1877) who was one of the founders of the New Harmony Community of Equality. Robert Fauntleroy became involved with Joseph Fauntleroy's business, and he also worked as a civil engineer. In 1849, Robert Fauntleroy was sent to the Gulf of Mexico by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and he died there of cholera soon afterwards.
