Campbell Brown was born on 27 November 1840 to Percy and Lizinka Brown. He was the cousin, stepson, and staff officer of Confederate General Richard S. Ewell during the Civil War. Ewell married Lizinka, his first cousin, in 1862. Brown was the grandson of George Washington Campbell Brown and the nephew of David Hubbard. He committed suicide on 30 August 1893.
