Crellin family.

Hide Profile

The Crellin family came to America from Liverpool, U. K., where they had been middle-class tradesmen, in 1823. In the following year, they settled in the town of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. After their father's death in 1837, the two surviving sons, Thomas (b. Dec. 22, 1821-d. June 16, 1909) and John (b. June 19, 1823-d. Jan., 1885), entered the employment of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Thomas served in the Second Pennsylvania Regiment in the Mexican War, taking part in the siege of Veracruz and the battles of Cerro Gordo and Jalapa before being felled by a near-fatal attack of malaria. John stayed with the LC&N and in 1846 was made toll collector at White Haven at the head of the Lehigh Canal. He also engaged in private business as a lumber merchant.
