Isaac R. Conwell was born 23 April 1839 and was a resident of Liberty, Indiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 20 September 1861 and was commissioned into B. Company of the 2nd indiana Cavalry Regiment. The regiment left the state on 16 December 1861 and was actively engaged throughout the war. Conwell was wounded during the Battle of Lookout Mountain in November 1863. He survived and was promoted to captain. Conwell mustered out on 4 October 1864. He was married to Genevieve Alice Robinson in 1872 and died 10 August 1912.
