Little information is available regarding William B. Sewall and has been gleaned from information in these papers. Sewall lived in Portland, Maine and was a member of the Torpedo Club, a literary group. He also appears to have had some connection with the Portland Advertizer and Gazette. Sewall may have been a lawyer in his later years as some of his correspondence requests legal opinions.

William Bartlett Sewall (1782-1869) was the only son of Daniel Sewall (1755-1842) of York and Kennebunk, Maine. The younger Sewall graduated from Harvard College in 1803 and practiced law in Portland and Kennebunk. In the 1820s he was editor of the Portland Advertiser and he authored several editions of The Maine Register and United States Calendar. He was a distant relative of Joseph Sewall (1688-1769), Joseph Sewall (1795-1851), and Edmund Quincy Sewall (1828-1908).
