Constance C. Greene, nee Clarke, was born October 27, 1924, in New York City. She attended Skidmore College in the 1940s, and later worked as a reporter for the Associated Press. She published her first book for children and young adults, A Girl Called Al in 1969. The book recounts the experiences of a spunky 13-year-old non-conformist named Al, and her family and friends. The book was an American Library Association Notable Book and was also an honor book at the Washington Post 'World Spring Book Festival in 1969. Greene wrote several other books about Al and critics have praised the stories for their warmth, vitality, and wit. She has also been lauded by critics for her believable characters who are rooted in reality. Greene's books have been popular with both girls and boys, who have appreciated the believable and often lighthearted situations in which her characters find themselves. Greene has also written books that deal with more dramatic subjects, such as Beat the Turtle Drum, a work based upon the death of the author's older sister at age thirteen. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Greene continued to write books for what she has referred to as middle-aged kids. Biographical Sources: Something About the Author, vol. 72; Twentieth Century Children's Writers, 3rd ed., pp. 403-404.
