Born in Springville, N.Y., in 1878, he graduated from Syracuse University in 1899, and from University of Buffalo Medical School in 1903. Associated with the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences since 1901, Dr. Cummings became the director of the museum in 1934, a position he held until 1948. He married Gertrude H. Voss in 1914; they had two daughters, Virginia L. Cummings and Mrs. Edward W. Braunlich.
