Mary Elizabeth Barnicle, born April 17, 1891, was a folklorist who taught at New York University during the 1930s and 1940s. Tillman Cadle, born June 27, 1902, had been a coal miner and labor union organizer in Kentucky before meeting Barnicle in 1935. Both were interested in folk music and collecting ballads and made numerous field recordings throughout the South during the years from 1935 through the early 1950s. They married in 1936 and eventually moved to Rich Mountain Gap near Townsend, Tenn., where Barnicle died Nov. 26, 1978, and Cadle died Oct. 22, 1994.
