The Department of Zoology was established on July 31, 1947, as part of a general reorganization of the United States National Museum. At that time, the Department of Biology was divided into the Departments of Zoology and Botany. The Department of Zoology was abolished during 1963-1964 with the creation of the Departments of Entomology, Vertebrate Zoology, and Invertebrate Zoology.
Head Curators of the Department of Zoology included Waldo L. Schmitt, 1947-1957; Herbert Friedmann, 1957-1961; Fenner Albert Chace, Acting Head Curator, 1961-1962; and Horton Holcombe Hobbs, Jr., 1962-1964.
