Before Alaska became a state in 1959, fish and game resources in the Territory of Alaska were managed by the federal government. The Alaska Game Commission operated first under the Bureau of Biological Survey in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later under the Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
