Mounce, Robert H.
Robert H. Mounce was born in 1922 and grew up as the son of a college professor in Minot, North Dakota. His terminal degree in higher education was the Ph.D. in Biblical Criticism from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. During the next eight years he was chairman of the Department of Biblical Studies at Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota. At the same time, he launched his career as an author. His first book, Greek Diagrams on Romans: An Exegetical Workbook, was published at Fuller Seminary in 1956. In 1960, The Essential Nature of New Testament Preaching was published, followed by his “Commentary on Philippians” in the Wycliffe Bible Commentary. More recent works include “The Book of Revelations” in the New International Commentary on the New Testament, Answers to Questions that Bug Believers, Answers to Questions About the Bible, What are We Waiting For? And Pass It On, a commentary on Paul’s letters to Timothy. He became president of Whitworth College on January 15, 1981 and was officially inaugurated on April 24, 1981. He retired from his position in 1987. He and his wife Jean were honored at a banquet on April 26, 1987. He was praised for helping turn the tide of a shrinking enrollment in the seventies and stabilizing the student population at 1,900; balancing the budgets, securing a four-fold increase in endowment, and systematically upgrading campus facilities. This file consists largely of folios sent over from the president’s office which cover Dr. Mounce’s term of office through 1981, but reaching back to the4 Lindaman administration. There are folios relating to Dr. Mark Lee, Acting Dean; Dr. David K. Winter, Dean, Vice President, and Executive Vice President; Dr. Duncan S. Ferguson, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President and Provost, and Acting President; Dr. Richard Ferrin, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Mark L. Koehler, President; Dr. C. J. Simpson, Dean of the Faculty, Executive Vice President, and Acting President; and Dr. Edward B. Lindaman, President.
