Jan Drabek was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on May 5, 1935, the younger of two sons of a lawyer/journalist. He moved to New York with his family in 1949 while in his teens. He holds a teaching degree received from UBC in 1966 and taught at Kitsilano High School for ten years. He has also worked as a newspaperman, broadcaster, refugee resettlement officer and travel agent. Drabek has written a number of popular fiction and non-fiction books. He has also written children's fiction, published numerous short stories, articles and critical reviews for newspapers and periodicals, and had a column for several years in "The B.C. Teacher." He was a member of the National Council of the Writers' Union of Canada and has served two terms as the President of the Federation of B.C. Writers. In the 1980s he also tutored for the Open Learning Agency. He now lives in Vancouver.
