Born in Spartanburg District, S.C.; Porter was a resident of Selma, Alabama, at the time of his admission to S.C. College in 1846; graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1852, and served as Presbyterian minister at various churches in Georgia before and after the Civil War.
