Robert Allyn, the first president of Southern Illinois University, was born in Connecticut on JAnuary 25, 1817. In 1841, he graduated with honors from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. He served as head of Wilbraham Academy, Connecticut, and East Greenwich Academy in Rhode Island; and served two terms in the state legislature and as state superintendent. He was professor of Greek and Latin at Ohio University, and headed the Wesleyan Academy at Cincinnati. For eleven years prior to his coming to Carbondale, Illinois, he was president of McKendree College in Illinois. He was president of Southern Illinois Normal University from 1874-1892. He died in January of 1894.
