Professor and Dean of Physics, 1902-1941, at University of South Carolina; native of Sumter County, S.C.; awarded B.S. in 1898 and M.A. in 1910 from USC; attended summer sessions at University of Chicago and Cornell University, 1906-1908; in 1904, Carson married Agnes McCallum of Sumter; father of three children: Agnes, Mary Elizabeth, and Ashmead Courtenay, Jr.
