James Vint Grant was born in Glenluce, Dumfries & Galloway, on 03 August 1908 . His father, James Grant, was a boilermaker. James attended the University of Glasgow from 1926-1931 , taking classes in Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Mathematics in his first year; Natural Philosophy (Higher), Mathematics and Logic in his second, Mathematics (Honours), Natural Philosophy (Honours) and Education in his third; Mathematics (Honours) and Natural Philosophy (Honours) in his fourth, and Botany and Geology in his fifth and final year. He was awarded a first class certificate in Natural Philosophy and a second class certificate in Chemistry (Ordinary) in 1927, and a second class certificate in Natural Philosophy (Higher) in 1928. He graduated with a third class honours MA in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in June 1930 and a BSc in November 1931 . He subsequently worked as teacher in Glasgow. He died on 27 November 1993 in Clydebank.
