John J. Slocum joined the staff of the Smithsonian's Director General of Museums in 1969 to serve as coordinator of planning for the Institution's participation in the celebration of the American Revolution Bicentennial in 1976. Slocum's duties included representing the Smithsonian on the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission (ARBC) and other participating public and private organizations. In 1970, planning for Smithsonian Bicentennial activities was assumed by the Assistant Secretary for History and Art. Slocum continued to represent the Smithsonian at meetings of the ARBC as Special Assistant to the Secretary for Bicentennial Planning. He also served as Public Relations Officer, National Museum of History and Technology, with primary responsibility for Bicentennial activities. Slocum's official ties with the Smithsonian ended in 1974, although he served as an occasional consultant through the late 1970s.
