Henry Balding Lewis (1889-1966) was born in Bedloe's Island, New York. He received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1913. He was adjutant general of Western Defense Command from 1940 to 1942, reaching the rank of brigadier general in June 1942. He was assistant adjutant general of the Army in 1942 and 1943, then adjutant general and assistant chief of staff of 12th Army Group from 1943 to 1945. He was administrative adviser to the administrator of veteran's affairs in 1945 and 1946, and assistant adjutant general of the Army from 1946 to 1949. He retired in May 1949 at the rank o f major general.
