Jasper Monumental Association (Savannah, Ga.)

The Jasper Monumental Association was organized on December 27, 1878 for the purpose of erecting a monument in memory of Sgt. William Jasper who died at the assault of Savannah, October 9, 1779. Membership in the association was composed of "Irishmen and Friends of Ireland." The monument's cornerstone was laid in on October 9, 1879, the centennial of Jasper's death. The completed monument was unveiled on February 22, 1888 with President Grover Cleveland and Governor John B. Gordon attending.
