Robert Gold Howat, MB ChB was born on 19th December 1887 in New Cumnock, Ayrshire. His father, Robert Howat, worked as a School Board Officer. He matriculated as a medical student at the University of Glasgow in 1914, aged 26 years, and graduated on 20th April 1920.
As a medical student he received prizes in Practical Anatomy (second class certificate); Practical Physiology (second class certificate); Clinical Medicine (Junior Division - second class certificate); Opthamology (second class certificate); a Commendation Certificate; Gynaecology (second class certificate).
His entry in the 1967 Medical Directory states "MB ChB Glas 1920. (Glas.); Pharm. Chem 1911. Late Hon. Phys. Roy, Lancaster Infirm,"
