Mercer, W. A. (William Allen), 1855-
Variant namesArmy officer (8th Infantry, 1880-1898, 7th Cavalry, 1898-?) and acting Indian agent, Leech Lake Agency, Minn., 1899-1901.
Prior to his Jan. 5, 1899, transfer to the new Chippewa agency at Leech Lake, Capt. Mercer had been acting Indian agent at the Omaha and Winnebago Agency in Nebraska. Although Mercer arrived and began establishing the Leech Lake facility in February, 1899, Congress did not formally authorize its creation until Mar. 1, 1899.
